Comfort for dry eyes
BARCELONA — A novel eyelid massaging device improved symptoms of dry eye by enhancing stability and uniformity of the tear lipid layer, according a speaker.
“Eyepeace is designed to express the meibomian glands by a massaging, vertical motion, as a treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). It is meant to be used by the patients at home twice a day,”
Johnny Moore, MA,FRCOphth, PhD, said at the EuCornea meeting preceding the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.
A small pilot study was performed on 20 subjects with confirmed obstructive MGD-related evaporative dry eyes without evidence of aqueous deficiency. They received an Eyepeace device and used it twice a day for 2 minutes at a time to massage their eyelids as instructed.
“On presentation, more than half of the patients were using topical artificial tears. After 2 weeks of Eyepeace treatment, mean symptom scores improved significantly. Interferometry grading and TBUT showed marked improvement, and a significant increase in corneal temperature was shown by thermography,” Moore said.
